Thanks Mike:
Nice little farming valley.
Are those vineyards I see?
I've been to Stinson Beach, and over the mtn from Sacramento
a couple times. That's as far N as I've been in CA. Further So, over much of it many a time.
We had a yard in both LA and Sacramento. Went fishing to Faralon's in '67.
Delivered a load to the Presideo once in '73, Army vehicles.

MtnGoat: Always idiots everywhere it seems.
Hope they're caught.
We had one here last month, stuffed a rag in the filler spout of a car and
fired it up. Courthouse maintenance guys saw the smoke and pulled it out
before it went up. They also caught the jerk. No one hurt, $300 damage to the car. Mighty lucky.

How's the fire's doing by now? Not much in the papers and I don't watch tv.

Potter Valley "DID" have lots of pear orchards but the wine thing took over maybe 20 to 25 years ago and a lot of them got pulled up and replaced with vineyards. Even after the burn, they're still picking grapes.
There's still a few pear orchards in the North end.
Went by our small corner store yesterday and there was a Cal Fire truck there.
The guy was checking his phone. That's about the only place a cell phone will work reliably. Mentioned to him that it looked like they had everything pretty much under control and most of the fires out. Gave him a big THANK YOU.
He was from Clovis in the Sacramento Valley. These guys and gals came from everywhere to fight fires for us.

No reliably cell phone coverage in parts of the Valley didn't help with getting out a warning. I have a "land line" so we got phone updates from the Sheriff's Dept. Don't bother to use me cell phone till I'am out of the Valley.
It was mentioned that "maybe" the fires were started by an arsonist? Folks just needing to find someone to blame. Blame it on Mother Nature.
If they find someone starting fires, HANG THEM HIGH and be done with it!!

Hi Mike:

No idea when the bird flew over taking pictures. Didn't notice
much in the N end, more on the south end looked like orchards or
vineyards. Can't focus right down close, amazing what we can see though.

Was looking at Venice beach, s/bil used to live near there. Could make out some people, no details but, just enough to tell that much. Looking at NT, AU last summer believe I saw some buff's crossing a dirt track between brushy sections.

Cuz in LR has the same signal problem there. Her man is trying to die of cancer. They're worried about wind blowing a dead 100' pine over on the house. She can't do it, and he's not able to now. Such is life ain't it?

Seems like we lost a couple of "older" Ladies in the fires. Up at the North end of the Valley where the winds were blowing the most and where the initial fire started. Quite a ways back and not the easiest to get to in a hurry. One was VERY sick and not too unexpected at her passing and not sure about the other. Couple of younger folks got caught and couldn't get out when the fire trapped them. Life sure sucks at times.

Sorry to hear about them.
Did the younger folks lose the game too?

From what I gather, younger family tried to get out but the fire caught them before they could get clear. Started out in the car, fire blocked their way so they bailed out and tried it on foot. Big mistake. Fire moved faster than ANYBODY could have imagined. Got one of the teen kids and the rest of the family got burned a bit.
I don't think anybody could have planned for that type of situation. And not much of a warning either. The fire was on everybody before they knew what hit them.

OK, read about those folks.
stupid getting out of the car.
Ram thru it and hope for the best.
Much better would be 4x4 just in case.

Panic kills a great many.
