I will try is to partially pull the bullets out of the case and seat them closer to the lands. Right now they are sitting .055 away. Could solve the problem.

How significantly did your smith modify the factory contour? Never a plus for accuracy of a button rifled barrel..

If you're looking at new barrels have you contacted Pac-Nor? Every .17 and .20 barrel I have if not factory, is a Pac-Nor Super Match 3 groove stainless and "knock wood", I've never had a clunker.
They took my CZ 527 Varmint, used my wildcat reamer and chambered said 1 in 12 twist Super Match, 3 groove, Stainless to .20 Ackley Hornet. removed my old barrel, lapped the lugs and such, then installed the new barrel for $660.00 with barrel included in that. That was spring before last. I couldn't be more pleased and the rifle shoots bug-holes! Just a thought.
Hope ya figure out something that works for ya, I know how frustrating stuff like you are going through is. Good luck .

P.S.
Have you tried all the factory ammo available to see if there might be one of em the rifle likes? As handloaders ya tailor the load to the rifle, in a factory rifle ya do the same thing buy trying different ammo and bullet weights.

First off, Phil, have you shot it-your results?

Sometimes changing shooters, shows improvement...not to criticize your

SIL's shooting skills....just saying....

Also, You have 3 types of factory ammo available, and I would try all three:

20 Vmax, 25 HP, and the NTX...one might give you the performance and

meet the factory ammo requirement.

MGM is a quality outfit...they have made dozens of custom and off the shelf

barrels for me through the years, all their work is great and they have a

great attitude, too!

Bullberry is Top Notch, also!

Just some thoughts...

Bill

P.S. Agree with Doug on Pac Nor barrels...also Lilja...

CS,

I had a 30 Carbine T/C factory barrel that performed as your Bee barrel.

The chambering was so bad and misaligned, that it stripped the bullets and

leaded the barrel so bad it could not be used.

T/C offered refund, but I took credit on a different new barrel...don't remember

what cartridge I chose, but it had no problems. Did you send your Bee barrel

back to MGM? What'd they say?

Bill

Bill,
Unless I'm missing something. You are talking about MGM "Match Grade Machine".

They are talking about GM "Green Mountain".

Two totally different animals as you know................

I have a MGM "Match Grade Machine" 22" Bull Stainless Match .17 WSM contender and it shoots, boy does it shoot

They have a 17HH reamer and will stand behind their finished product.

Screamin,

This is what I was addressing...but, missing the point is a favorite past-time for me...and I may have done it here..looks like it, too!..

I mistook the "GM" as "MGM"

The Hornet needs to head space off of the rim. I had my Ruger set up at .063 witch is a little snug on a few. After that neck size and you will in essence be headspacing off of the shoulder also. I have a H&R i rechambered.17HRM to .17HH and The Ruger. Neither shoot any factory ammo over 1 1/8". Both shoot the 20 VMax from 1/2"-3/4" I think you may have got a bad barrel. Most GM barrels are great shooters, but not all.
