Default New Cooper broken

But alas, it was sure shooting well before it broke! It is a M38 Varminter chambered in 20 VT. The extractor has failed at round 72. It had seemed a bit rough, right from the start.

Two other fellows from the .204 forum, have also had extractor issues, with one falling out after 11 rounds! Have any of you experienced problems such as this?

The extractor almost seems like it's too small, and has excessive slop. It barely engages the case. They are not open today, so I will call Monday.

On a brighter note, have a load that puts five rounds into the high 1's when I do my part. Thanks Alex, and Dan C.

Default Cooper broke

Hey Mike, Sorry to hear about that extractor.
The M 38 action has, until recently, always been used with rimmed cases.
Cooper describes this extractor as "Sako style modified for rimmed cases".
I'd like to hear what they have to say about your problem...keep us posted.

Default Give Rob Behr a call at Cooper...

... and he will either send you an extractor or ask you to send the bolt back and put one in, return it the same day.

I've replaced the extractor on three of my Coopers. Not a difficult job.

Default I had an extractor issue once

I had an extractor fail on a Cooper 21 in 22PPC. The leading edge of the extractor was not properly shaped and it bent in front of the bolt face requiring replacement. Cooper fixed the rifle in two days and returned it to me. I have no real complaints, the customer service was great.
I just brought home a Cooper 21 Phoenix in 17Mach4 over the weekend and I am excited to get it to the range.

I spoke with Rob this morning, and he also figures the extractor is bent. He asked that I send him the bolt, he will replace, and then overnite it back to me.

A very pleasant gentleman.

The load I am using is 17.6 gr of N120, BR4 primers, 32 grain Blitzking with .020 jump. Velocity is 3710 fps. Please work up slowly to this, as it appears to be about max in my rifle. At 17.8 I had stretched primer pockets, hard bolt lift.
I am going to try again this weekend around 17.4 just to be a bit more on the safer side. This rifle will be used in 100° temps next summer. As the fellows told me here, be sure and read the sticky at the top of the forum. Some of the loads from various sources are, well, I'll just say optimistic. Some I've seen, I don't even believe it's possib;e to get that much powder in the case!

Default Cooper guys, now don't get excited.

What would you do if Cooper was to have a problem and customer service would no longer be available. I had a Cooper for about 6 months and had problems with it that should never have let it out of the factory. I chose to sell. Kenny
