700 ,17 Remington
Local shop has a 700 BDL, with the skip line checkering and the bolt can be opened with the safety on. Bolt face looks unfired and it looks like a safe queen. Has a Tasco, price is o.k. My question is had Remington gotten to making good .17 barrels by the time this series was in production?

700 .17 Rem
If is a good price and clean, as you say, and you want it, you can always re-barrel if need be. Bill K

The 17 Remington barrels typically shoot nickle to quarter size groups, CZ 17 Remington Barrels typically shoot nail head (or smaller) size groups. The choice is yours....

I have two 700 17 Remingtons
I have two 17 Remingtons that I shoot Todd Kindler's 30 grain Gold Bullets with IMR 4007SSC Powder. Both guns are stock Remington 700's with only Rifle Basix triggers added. I'm getting 3700fps (3/8" groups @ 100-yds) with the 700 Classic and 3670fps (1/4" groups @ 100-yds) with the 700 BDL. Tested on 75 & 80 degree days with no pressure problems.... It just a GREAT load for the 17 Remington....

I have a bone stock 700 sps 17 rem from one of the last years they made the gun. Fluted stainless barrel. Shoots the 25 Bergers and 27 Kindlers very well. Usually in the half inch and under category.
Buy it if its a good deal! |

I have read that the older 700 BDL's in 17 Rem had some bad barrel material (like the first few years). Not a defect, just a poor choice in metal. I have no experience with them though, so take it for what it's worth. Barrel metallurgy has come a long way though. I'd still buy it and rebarrel it if need be. |

This year I'm going to tame this guy down a bit with the 25s and use it primarily for a fox gun. I've also read the very first 17s that remington did had fouling trouble. Mine is easy as pie to clean. |

I think also they were 1 in 10 twists. Really good for the 25gr bullets. Larry

I have 3 or 4 700's in 17 Remington....the "classic's" shoot the nickel to quarter size groups, back in 98 I got a new kevlar stocked 700, stainless, heavy varmint, "the most accurate rifle we make" (quote from the catalog) other than the 40x, and 6 inches is as good as it would shoot....sent it back to Remington, they got it to shoot twice as good as original....so in desperation, I purchased my first CZ........1/4" right off the bat! I probably have 3,000 rounds through it, and it's still well under 1/2".......rebarrelled the big 700 with a Schilen and now it's consistent under a 1/2" .....so that's where and why I am where I am on Remington's and CZ's. ymmv.....

This is a stock Remington 700 with a 26" Varmint weight Fluted Stainless barrel in 17 FB. It is bedded in a Boyd's stock, RB trigger and because it had a J lock it has a new firing pin, spring and shroud, but the barrel and action are factory stock. This is a 200 yard target, squares are half inch on a side and it will do this regularly. I have a couple of other Rem 17 FB, one SPS and one CDL, and they both shoot this good as well. I don't see much wrong with the quality of the Rem 17 caliber barrels.
