what is the best hornet brass to use for a ackley hornet?

Winchester. It's the only brass I use for the Minks. Most folk on here use WW brass as well. Adam

I don't know what the best is, I believe most use Winchester, Jim Calhoon recommends Remington for his 19 Calhoon Hornet (or at least he used to) in my opinion most Hornet brass that I've used over the years was pretty flimsy. With my 17 AH I started out using Winchester Hornet brass that I purchased in 1989, some was once fired some had been loaded as 22 Hornet at least one time. For what ever reason it went through the forming process better than the new Winchester brass?

Don't know if it's the best but I use WW. Happy with the AH Brass that comes out of it.

I think it depends on the reamer. As long as the reamer matches the brass you shouldn't have problems.

I use WW brass, the reamer used on my gun was designed for just that. I have a hundred or two of Rem brass, and it works just as well. I think the WW brass is probably a little heavier built, it holds about a half grain less powder than Rem brass.

The PPU and R&P were new brass and i lost a couple of each when Die Forming i think the new brass was too soft and buckled in the die the PPU had the worst looking primer bottom and the roughest flash hole i have seen and most split on the sholder when fireforming so i scrapped them,
The new R&P Brass was ok if more care was taken on dieforming and once annealed and fireformed is the most consistant of them.
All the other brass was used in my own 22hornet and there is nothing between them, At the moment all my cases are loaded with CCI400 10.8grns of Vit 120 pushing a 20gr V/Max at 3,637ft/sec and only fill cases about 85% capacity and with that load the point of impact is close enough not to re-zero for different cases
If i had choice i would use RWS the primer botom and flash hole look the cleanest and most uniform but i cant get any so my second choise is R&P.
i have had a few split necks with WW so only use them if stuck,

HA! - I use both WW and RP - I prefer RP. It is not only thinner, with slightly greater capacity, but has more consistant neck diameters. It has lasted better than WW as well, before neck splitting.

I've some WW brass that was initially shot FF in AH and after 3 loads, is starting to split.

I have RP brass that was fired 14 times as a .22Hornet, necked and FF as a .17AH - never annealed - ever, then reloaded 3 times and now is also starting to split - makes be FEEL as if the RP brass (fired 14 times more) is better - not only more consistant in size, ie: neck thickness, but probably stronger due to it's longevity and thinner,which is well known. I've found it to be just as accurate as WW brass - no difference there.

Of course, everyone knows Remington ships us all their BEST brass, and saves the crap-brass for the US market.

keep the charge's reasonable and brass will last nearly forever.
