.17 pee wee
Anyone shooting the .17 Pee Wee?
If so what action are you using? This is one of my favorites...The first one I built, or rather, had built.

It seems that the PeeWee has been reinvented as the 17 Garin. Actually a whole family of cartridges built on the 30 Carbine. Try Searching PeeWee and Garin and there is a decent amount of info.
It seems ?Foxhunter? has a lot of load data which can be found through the search. I am thinking of building one myself, a Garin though, for availability. Action: CZ 527 as 22Hornet Hornet rim and 30carbine rim are nearly the same size. Magazine: 527 mag for 221fireball. It is already 'tuned' for the case size. Brass: James Calhoun 19Badger brass is easy to form with just one step to make 17PW/Garin Most on hear will say the 17AH or the 17AckleyBee are the way to go, maybe. The AB has stronger brass, the hornet brass is cheaper. I like the Garin and will build one. Good luck with whichever you choose and keep your hand on your wallet around here Adam |

Adam,
So what your telling me is that the .19 Badger brass and the .17 Garin are dimensionally the same/EXCEPT for the neck????? One pass from .19 Badger to .17 Garin is all thats needed??? If so...........Sign me up. Phil. |

I've never done it, but so I've been told. That and the fact that I can get a reamer, guages, and dies from the same company really sold me. Reading through the Garin website it says the final forming step is done with one of the dies included in the reloading package. So you would not need to buy the full set of forming dies, only the loading dies if using 19Badger brass. That's the way I interpreted it anyway. I know some are forming 17PW from 19Badger already with different dies.
The bolt head of the CZ may need some work, I'm not 100% on that. Perhaps someone here can help on that topic, or a call to James calhoun would work as well. |

Well as the old saying goes, you learn something everyday if you pay attention. I have never heard of the 17 Garin. The 17 Pee Wee, I have is based on the .30 carbine case. Bob Scheutz of Scheutzen Gun Works, in Colo, built the gun back in the mid 60's. Later he moved to Olympia Washington, and is now known as Olympic Arms. Bob used to make one of the slickest carbine conversions you have ever seen. It is hard to tell at first glance that it is an M1 Carbine. It has had several thousand rounds through it, and the most accurate load is 11.0 Gr of 4227,and it runs @ 3800 fps. 11.3 gr. of 4198 lets it run at 3200, but is not as accurate. This was all done with an 18 Gr Williams bullet. It has been re-barreled once because a round shed a jacket and being unknown to me, I sent another round down the bore, and things got a little hairy about that time. The carbine only has one locking lug. The pressure cracked that locking lug, and swelled a Dog Knot in the barrell to about twice the size it had been, in a place about 2" long. Wanna guess what the pressure was? It would still shoot, but the accuracy was gone. I sent the rifle back to Bob and he re-barreled it. This was in the late 70's. I still shoot it and it still is a fun gun.
What has Garin done to the "Pee Wee", to cause it to be "Re-invented"? Has the case dimension been changed? Is it still the carbine case?

They didn't exactly reinvent "IT". They came up with a line of cartridges from 17-25cal. The whole system is called the Garin Surestrike system. One can buy the entire set of form dies to make .25, 6mm, .22, 5mm, and .17 Garin(Carbine) or just buy the form dies needed to get to your specific caliber choice. Since the 17 requires all form dies to produce from virgin Carbine brass it is the most expensive to buy. UNLESS YOU START WITH 19BADGER! Then all you should have to buy is the loading dies and your set.
All the cartridge specs and load information are on the Garin website. They also have comparisons to similar cartridges. IIRC the 17AH and the 17FB. Again the package deal is where the genius lies. I didn't know who to order a reamer from, they're all different. i.e. neck length and shoulder angle. Then even if I got the reamer I wanted I'd have to find a set of dies to fit. So garin it is. |

Here is a couple of shots of my 17/30 Pee Wee On an M1 Carbine action.
About the only thing you can see that is still carbine is the charging handle. All of the gas operating system has been "Tucked Under". It can be fired in the single shot mode or repeater mode. I hunt Woodchucks in North Western PA, and I have some 5 shot clips for hunting there. Even though I use it in the single shot mode.
