Good idea.
Works good if you can build the bolt head and do the centerfire conversion. This is exactly what my 5mm Shrike (5.0x28) rifle is, it was quite a project but worth the work.
There are no magazines that fit my 591 and I have not gone far enough to figure out how to make one work. I have to use a spring type "follower" to hold the round in position to feed the chamber. Not ideal but it works OK. The 580 is closed bottom receiver right? Not sure how it would feed but is about ideal size for the round. Have to lengthen the bolt travel and loading port as well. |

Thankyou. I can do the work. I have one from a 580. I was going to make it a single shot.

Good conversion
AS Rodgervitch said this project is well worth the effort. After reading about his 5mm shrike I built one on a 592 Rem. I think that the 580/590 series Remington is Ideal for the little F.N.case. I would recommend that you send for a copy of James Calhoon's step by step instructions for centerfire conversion. Garth

Can someone please list the small rimfire actions that are able to be converted as I have had no luck finding a 580 or 590 here in Australia. I have plenty of 5.7 brass but no small action to build a 4.4 or 5mm shrike on. What other actions could you guys suggest?? Ruger hornet?? Browning micro-hornet?? Zastava hornet or ????????????????? What can you guys suggest?? later P |

I am new here to he form. I have set of the James Calhoon plans for converting rimfire to centerfire. Don't have access to a scanner, but can copy and mail to you. I have Rem 591 that I am going to convert. I'm trying to find all the info that I can and decide which caliber conversion to do. I still need a little direction to help me make a choice

poindexter the 5.7x28 based wildcats seem to fit the bill as far as I can find out- but our more knowledgable members here will set you straight on the options.

Stupid question here. What makes the 580 etc desirable to do centerfire conversions? Is it the lock up, strenght of action or ??? What about one of the romanian trainers? I ask because I have 2-3 of them laying around collecting dust.

speculation on my part, if you are going to put a small centerfire in a rimfire action, you probably don't want an action where the locking lug is solely the bolt handle. some bolt handles are part of a one piece bolt and others are soldered on to the bolt.
if memory serves me, the 580 series has either 6 or nine locking lugs like the rem 788. i for one am glad to see the 4.4x28 getting the attention it deserves. the ultimate conversion would be the model 38 cooper repeater in 17 ccm rechambered to 4.4x28. i believe it would cure all the idiosyncrasies the model 38 had in 17ccm had, mainly the rims locking jamming the rifle. even better would have been the cooper model 40 using the anschutz clip. a slight lip modification would be necessary. just an opinion
