Just back from range and breakin of new 17 Rem. in SS varmint syn hvy barrel config. After breakin I shot groups and cleaned. These are all three shot groups from 100 yards. I shot one .250 group, and two.375 groups, and two .500 groups, and the biggest was one at .750 but I think I pulled that one myself. I also shot a few groups with my Sako A1 in 17M4 and I shot one at .250 and two groups at .375 not bad for the new remington for first time at the range. Thanks - redfeather.

I am in the process of trying to decide on a new toy. I can get a good deal on a 700 clasic in 17 rem , but then again the vss sounds great too. What are they going for?
Then I am thinking if I am going to buy a new rig I might as well bite the bullet and try a cooper...ahh decisions decisions.

I wish someone up here had a vss I could check out. By the sound of your trip to the range they are just what I need. Does it need any work? (trigger, stock to action fit ,bedding ect...) or are you happy with it as is?
so many questions .
Thanks

Drifter I always replaced the trigger spring on all my m-700 rifles with a spring out of a spring kit from brownell's, so that I can get a safe 1.5 pound trigger. These M-700 do not need any stock work they come with a HS precision stock that is really good. They do not need any bedding because the HS stock has a full length alum. bedding block in it which is why they cost so much. I paid $589 plus shipping from Zanders for mine, but I have wanted an all stainless M-700 in 17 rem for a long time. I did take the bolt apart and removed the new firing pin lock that rem. is now putting on there rifles, I just did not like that divot sticking out of the bolt schrod. Thanks - redfeather.

Sounds great, my 700 classic doesn't group consistently that good. I usually shoot 5 shot groups and average 3/4" with it. The real question is how bad it fouls? Mine shoots good and I am happy with it but it definitely likes to eat the copper. No big deal for me since I clean regularly anyhow but it takes more cleaning than I would like.

Don't mean to give the wrong impression here, I wouldn't sell my 700 classic and I like it very much. Just wondering how the stainless barrels are on the new ones.

Jim I did have some copper fouling, but I am like you I clean alot. I use Barnes CR-10 copper remover and it works great. I believe that after more breakin that the copper fouling will get to be less, but in all honesty it had about the same amount of fouling as the CM rem. barrels. It shoots pretty much the same as my CM 17 rem. does. Hope this helps - redfeather.

Jim I forgot to mention that there is no copper fouling on my 17M4 Sako with a SS Lilja barrel on it. So, obviously the SS Lilja barrels are much better quality. But, the rem is in 17 rem and not 17M4, so it might not be apples to apples comparison. Still the 17M4 does not foul which is alot easier from a cleaning standpoint.
