I can't say enough about the 20gr V-Max. I wish someone would step up to the plate, and come out with a 30gr version. I mentioned it to Hornaday, at the SHOT show, and they laughed. They said that the 20 was such a pain, they were done with new .17 stuff. They also said that the plastic tip moves most of the weight to the rear and makes it a real challenge to stabilize. This is backward from what I've always heard..... Still wishing......

That is backwards from what I understand also. The weight is supposed to be distributed at the base.

Either way, my current favorite bullets in both 20 and 25 grain weights are STARKES. I have some 30 grain Starkes to try now too and have high hopes for them as well. I have tried a fair number of .17 cal bullets and have a couple new ones to shoot but haven't found the time.

Johnny,
I called Mike at Nolser Bullets for confirmation on the 28gr BT. They are NOT working on a .17caliber bullet. Their machinery is not set up to make such a small projectile. Oh well so much for another miniature ICBM. Pass the word.

I called Nosler, and they said it was a rumor only........ In fact they said that a .17 bullet would break their dies......

Well, by moving the weight back and replacing it with plastic, the bullet becomes longer, and thus a faster twist is needed to stabilize it. After all, the long Berger 37-gr. .17's need a 1-in-6 or 7 twist to stabilize. Current .17's use 1-in-9 or 10 twists. By substituting plastic instead of much denser lead, the bullet must become longer. Adding only a few grains of plastic can make a bullet much longer because the plastic lacks density.

I have shot just about all of the different 17 bullets. I like the Berger bullets in 25g and 30g but only their match bullets not their MEF bullets. I have shot Hornadys 20g Vmax and 25g HP, and I like both of them. I used to shoot the rem 25g HP, but they are no longer made. I just received some 25g Starke bullets to try, and I also have some 30g Starke bullets on the way. For coyotes I am sure the 30g Berger and Starke will be the ticket. For fox the 25g bullets work better. I am going on a PD shoot in 3 weeks, and I will let you know how the 20g Vmax does on PD. I am also taking the 17 Rem w/ 25g Bergers, too.
