I'd like to ask for comments on case neck splitting, I have a customer that has a 14 that is splitting necks. I have no problems with mine, and I don't know how hard he is pushing them. In an effort to make my bullets come apart, I have pushed mine until I enlarged the primer pocket, but they still didn't split.(and the bullets didn't either :-) From my experience, this happens either by pushing them too hard or the cases actually being too hard......

thanks
russ

Russ,

Usually splitting necks is related to thick necks which could definitely be the case when necking down anything to .14 caliber. Neck turning should be an essential part of the case preparation as well as annealing. My bet would be that the necks are too thick and that they haven't been annealed. Let me know what you find out, but that is what I would figure.

Jim:

The hornet cases are very thin, even before reaming or turning, that's why I didn't bother to use the case for my rifle. I wanted something more substantial that I could trim if I wanted, and more capacity to boot. Possibly he is sizing them too much between firings.....

You didn't say what case he was using just that it was a .14. The hornet case is reasonably thin when necked down to .17 but I imagine that it gets thick enough to benefit from neck turning when you neck it from .22 to .14. Just a thought.
