The Mach IV is a .17-221. and yes it is well within reach for a 20 grain bullet to go 4000 fps. I have one that I have been loading for that was able to reach 4,000 fps out of a 20" barrel and the 20 grain bullets - this was a max load.

I recently re-barreled a .223 CZ 527 to .17 MachIV and 4,000 fps is quite doable with bullets under 25gr. I shot some loads yesterday that consisted of 20.5grs of H-335 and the 20gr V-max that averaged 4,104fps out of the 21.75" barrel. Berger 22gr fbhp bullets averaged 3,954 with 20.1grs. My vote goes for the MachIV. It is a very versatile and efficient little cartridge. Good luck with your project.

Nailman, I used a #2 contour Shillen chrome-moly blank with a 10" twist. Retail is about $140 for the blank. A gunsmith here in Sunbury Ohio trued the action, lapped the lugs, squared the bolt face and reciever, threaded, installed, chambered and headspaced the barrel, for a total of $200. This also included contouring the blank to match the original dimensions, and polishing and blueing both the barrel and action. It feeds the .17 MIV perfectly as is, no modifications are necessary. I picked up the CZ used at a local show for $300 It sure does make a nice little walk around varmint/predator calling rifle. Weight is just under 7lbs with a Burris 3X9 fullfield mounted in Millet rings.

Barry I have 3 rifles in 17M4 and you can get mach 4 with the 20g and 22g bullets easily. That CZ is a nice looking rifle.

Your following me around with that CZ picture aren't you? A few more exposures and I think I might be able to get the wife to buy off on a temporary insanity plea! "Honest honey, I completely lost my mind for a moment!, I won't ever do it again." I sure wish I could find some used CZ's out here, they just don't seem to be catching on yet. J&G is still the best bet for me at $429 new. I saw a new .223 at a show once, guy wanted $500 and another $50 for the rings, checked out his table at the next show and it was gone, go figure. Do you run into many used ones at your local gun shows? For $300 I'd sure be interested in gettin one!

Jay, would one more pic push you over the edge?...........sorry I am a bad man.......very bad. Actually CZ has been selling the heck out of these little rifles, but most people tend to keep 'em. I don't see too many used ones, but there are a few out there. When I see them for a decent price, I snatch them up. Search the net for gun auctions and I'd bet you will find one. There is a chance that CZ might make a small production run of 527's in .17. For more info, crunch up the Coyote Gods website

Click on my forum; "Tech Talk with S.Frame" and scroll down to a thread called ".17 Rem production run of 527's" I am trying to see just how many people would be interested as the minimum quantity has to be 150 rifles. Jay, If I find a good deal on a used one, I'll let you know. e-mail me.

they are not the same thing 17/221 has shorter neck than the mach IV the only way I know is found a set of 17/221 dies on sell for like 20 dollars one time called redding and asked they gave me the run down on the difference it is just a very rare caliber compared to the mach IV for all general purposes they get the same balistics but to say they are the same would be like saying the 222 mag and 223 are the same.
