Congratulations, the .17 Rem is a super round! The first thing you should do, at least what I found helpful, is contact Todd Kindler at The Woodchuck Den(330-897-0614 or www.woodchuckden.com) and order his book The Senasational Seventeens. This will provide a great wealth of good information on relaoding and components. Each gun is different so order a variety of bullets such as Starke, Hornady, Calhoon's, and Berger's in some different weights. Good powders to try include Vit N-135, IMR 4320, Varget, and IMR 4895. I use Remington brass and Rem 7 1/2 BR primers. You can do a lot of brass prep such as flash hole deburring, uniform the primer pockets, and neck turning since it all helps. Keep records of everything and all your targets. Good targets can be had from someplace like Briarbank Ballistic Laboratory which allow you to list all information regarding loads and weather right on the target or you can make your own. My particular gun likes Vit N-135 and 25 gr. Starke's the best, Varget and 25 gr. Berger's are a close second. Both are great on varmits, too. Post any questions on the board here and you will likely get all the help you need. Good luck and have fun!!

Welcome to the wonderful world of 17s and reloading. Bryani's advice is very good. I would also invest in a quality press the first time out, avoiding the light duty Lee and other aluminum press'. Hornady, Redding, RCBS and others make a good cast iron press that is affordable. The 17 cal takes a special size funnel as well, the standard funnels just have too large an opening. If you plan on reloading for other calibers in the future the Midway funnel kit is a nice one. It has interchangeable inserts for different calibers, very slick. I would also recommend a VLD style inside chamfering tool. I seem to have better luck with it than with the standard 45* tool. The 17s are very sensitive to slight variations in powder charges so I end up weighing every charge. I have used all the brands of reloading dies and have had good results with all of them except the Hornadys. I like their inline style seater but have had problems with their sizing dies and customer service. RCBS and Redding are hard to beat. The 17s CAN (not always) foul more than the larger calibers so be sure to clean often in your quest for accuracy. HTH,
Tim

Just to add to the good advice that the others gave you, Winchester 760 and IMR 4320 have worked the best for me so far. I also am a big fan of Starke bullets - they have done well for me in anything that I have used them in. You should definitely be able to do better than 1 - 1.5" out of a bullberry barrel. Feed it the good stuff and don't be happy till it is shooting closer to 1/2".
