Life is too good, sometimes. I have been thinking about building a sub-.20 caliber rifle for a while, and a friend mentione that he knew of a .223 that "wouldn't chamber" and was being sold for $100. I bought it, sight unseen, figuring I had the action cheap and could fix the problem.
Rifle is a Remington 700 BDL chambered in .17-223 Improved, with a nice scope too!! Hot Dog!! (No wonder it "wouldn't chamber" a .223, either.) Problem is, finding load data and die sources for .17-223 is hard enough, but add the 'Improved' and it gets tougher. I am going to have my 'smith cast the chamber to be sure what I've really gotten, but could use load info to start out with. Anybody else out there shoot this caliber? Mike |

Mike,
You might want to pull the barrel and cut it back and rechamber to a regular .17 Rem. Will be much cheaper in the long run and you WILL get the same performance. Just my 2 cents worth. Corbin |

I have a JGS reamer for the 17-223 Ackley Improved if you have a chamber problem. |

Since it is on the 700 action, I would consider getting Wilson to make up a neck die and an inline seater. The cost would be cheaper than anything else that I can think of. That is a heck of a find, even just for the action. The other option of course is to set it back and chamber to a .17 Remington or something of the like (javelina for me). Does it look like an aftermarket barrel or a factory barrel rechambered. Is the barrel stamped? You might want to check the twist of that thing, it may be set up to shoot the VLD's. I recall that Todd Kindler has a version of this cartridge that he calls the .17 VLD and it was designed for the 37 grain Bergers and a fast twist barrel. You might contact him for information on loads and dies and such. (330)897-0614. Related link: http://www.woodchuckden.com |
