Being another of us nuts that insist upon wildcatting on rimfire actions I have to wonder at yoour particular reasons for selecting the 581 over the 591 or the 541. I understand and apreciated the 6 lug action, but the 591 would have a closer boltface I would think, though harder to find at that price. And doesn't the 541 already have an adjustable trigger, again there is a price issue. But if it were strictly price, you could have gone the route I took. The M-1969 Romainian trainer....$45.

Like Jim I to had a 591 that is now in Nailman's collection. I chose not to use the 591 because I didn't like the ejector. I wanted the 580 as 1st choice for the single shot action but turned one down because of the price ( $345.00 ) This 581 will have to do. I have been interested in the 5.75 Velo Dog Case because of it's near exact size of the 22 Mag Case. Rim is only .033 larger and base is only .028 larger with length being .068 longer. This route would be less alteration of a centerfire Bolthead conversion from Schroeder. Also just to be different and because I've always been fasinated with the 14 cal. Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the 17 CCM is based off the Velo Dog Case. If I do nothing else with It can always have a reloadable 22 Mag. using the Velo Dog Cases as they are. Cost will be a big deciding factor He He At any rate I think either one will be interesting.

LOL.
My particular conversion involves necking the 25 ACP down to 22 caliber. This requires a new centerfire bolt face and some magazine work in addition to rechambering the barrel. But I can get 1850fps with the 35gr V-Max (Chronographed average) and accuracy at those speeds is right at the same as the original rimfire version with target ammo.Pacific Precision has the reamer drawings for the 22 Epperson Cricket, and Fred at Z-Hat.com can make the dies. As for the bolt face, well you're on you own. That isn't too bad, I machined my own for the Rom. Now the new centerfire bolt for the 10/22 has proven to be a bear to come up with.

Sounds like a good price, the bolt conversion will be another 100 bucks though. I think that you would be well-served with a .14 hornet since it is more common (not that any .14 is common). The .14 hornet is exactly the one that I was going to do on the 591, but now Nailman has that one in his collection.

Keep me posted, I get the bug to build something new but keep talking myself out of it. Anybody else building anything on the Remington 580-591-541 actions? Would like to hear about it. Nailman.......
