Where is a good place to find and buy some take-off barrels in 17 and 22 caliber for experimenting?

Thanks

Scott

Ahh...Competition. LOL. I've got 3 17 cal "shot out" barrels that the previous owners decided were too far gone to set back. Granted I think they made the right choices, these are factory barrels in 17 Rem. Well 2 cam from previous owners, one came from a friend that worked as a gunsmith (mechanic) and it was in his parts "accumulation". Ruger 10/22 factory barrels are fairly easy to come by. Most gun shops that do barrel upgrades will offload their excess 22 rimfire barrels fairly inexpensively. Of course they are a couple of thou tighter than 22 CF barrels. Then there is Century International Arms and the U-Fix-Em deals. 22 Rimfire barreled actions are real affordable, actually about the same as the $15 a Ruger 10/22 take off barrel generaly brings. The thing about the Ruger 10/22 barrels is, you generally only get one shot at a good chamber. If you have to set it back, it's close to or less than the 16" minimum for a rifle. IF you go the 22 rimfire barrel route...do not plan on using Remington Bullets. My experience is that they are too hard to swage that extra bit and result in pressure problems.

Oh..by the way...what is it you're doing?

I currently do my own rimfire chambering for competition. I have several reamers that I would like to test. As for centerfire I have ordered my first reamer,17 squirrel, and would like to practice with the centerfire.

Thanks

Scott

I saw an ad in Precision Shooting from a guy that wanted to buy a .17 Remington Take-off barrel. I called the ad because I have a barrel to sell. He said that he received multiple calls and purchased a barrel in the first two days.

Another likely place would be to run an ad in Small Caliber News, asking to buy take-off barrels. I have one that I will sell from my 700 classic. I am going to rebarrel and chamber in .17 Javelina by spring time. Drop me an e-mail off line if you are interested - it has about 350 rounds through it currently and shoots good.
