I believe that you will find that they are the same. My .17 Ackley Hornet just says .17 Hornet on the barrel but the dies that I use are .17 Ackley Hornet. My barrel is from Bullberry and my dies are from Redding. I think that you will find that a lot of .17 Ackley Hornets are marked .17 Hornet. You can contact the maker of the barrel to get the specs for the reamer to determine if it is suitable. In my Sensational Seventeens manual, there are reamer prints for all of the cartridges listed, and the .17 Ackley Hornet is one of them.

Unfortunately thats not the case here. This is simply a necked down Hornet not blown out with a sharp shoulder, ie a K. I have a chamber cast and cases. The best I have so far is use K loads less 10% but I'd like to see if anyone has loaded it. Thanks

Couple of choices. First is that you can get it reamed out to an ackley hornet which is easier to get dies for, etc. Secondly is that you can use the fireform data or loads for the ackley hornet. I believe that a case full of 4227 behind a 20 grain bullet is what I used in mine to fireform. You should certainly be able to find a good load with either the 4227 or the 1680. And, I would second the suggestion to reduce any load by 10% as a start anyhow. You may be able to increase it a little more, but my feeling is that you will be able to fill the case with either of the above to the base of the neck. Work up carefully and keep a close eye on pressure signs - flat primers, sticky extraction, and primer cratering. Do you have dies that work with this critter? If not, I would simply have the chamber reamed to ackley hornet dimensions and get Redding dies.

Well actually i have RCBS dies made from the cast and since this particular little gem was a recent American Custom Gunmakers Guild gun of the year made up on a very rare miniature Gibbs Farquason I don't think we'll be hitting it with a K reamer. And yes I already asked why o why the guy just didn't make it a K hornet te begin with. I suppose afer having fun over the last year with my .14 WalkerHornet this should be a treat. Thanks Jim.

Sounds like a heck of a rifle you got there. You should send pictures so that we can all see this gem. Since you already got dies and considering the history of the gun - I agree. I just hate to fork over the cash for custom dies. If you use the load data for Ackley hornets, you shouldn't cause any problems, you just won't be able to get as much in the case. Keep us posted and feel free to send pics so that I can put them up on the site.
