I am a die hard mod 70 man, if I could have all my rifles built on that action I would happy. I have been thinking about trying to build a 17 mach IV on a win mod 70 classic featherweight action for some time now. Do any of you guys have any info on such a conversion? or a gunsmith to reccomend. I am guessing that it wouldn't be too difficult to have one rebarreled. then comes the feeding issue. my other short action rems will scoop up the m4 dummy rounds and feed them, but being too short they are not grabbed by the bolt face for extraction. I was thinking the mag well and follower could be customized a little to accomodate the shorter rounds...what else.. I'm sure there will be a few more details to deal with.
Thanks |

Drifter, I believe the Classic Featherweight is made only with a .473 boltface. The .17 MK4 cartridge has a .378 boltface. If this was a 700 action, the boltface can be bushed to .378 with a Sako extractor added. I'm just not sure that can be done with the Winchester, or any other, controlled feed bolt. You could call and ask a few smiths if it's possible, but I've never seen a Model 70 C.F., pre 64 or new, chambered in any of the .378 family. Not saying it can't be done, I've just never seen or heard of it. Picked up a Featherweight in .243 this year. Needs a little fine tuning, but it sure wants to shoot. On heck of a lot lighter than the old beat up M70 '06 at the end of the day. Great carry gun for jackrabbits on showshoes. Clint. |

Thanks for the info Clint, these are the little details that can bite ya in the butt. I was thinking that the bolt from a 223 would not have to be modified to work with the 221fb case. hmmmm gonna have to do some more homework here. Way back when I had a m70 cf in 270 win, what a sweet shooter that gun was, with the action bedded and bore polished and trigger adjusted some it was the most accurate sporter weight rifle I have ever owned. should have never sold that one. By the way , thanks for the info below on my 17 cal fur damage issue. I have just loaded up some 25g rpvb's in a reduced load for the 17 M4 that should be around 3000 fps, hopefully that will be a bit more gentle. I should be able to find a cooperative test subject this weekend. see ya |

Drifter, from what I understood, Clint was saying that he didn't think that the m70 featherweight came in the smaller calibers that use the .223 bolt face. If you have one in a .223 already, it should work fine for the .17 Mach IV. The bolt face requirement is the same for the both the .223 and the Mach IV. |

That's what I thought. I was starting to wonder about the differences in the 222 223 and 221. No classic in 223.... That is ok, I will work around that one. I may be able to get a deal on a m70 in 223, not sure on the model but it has a blind mag. hopefully I will be starting soon on this one. see ya |
