I purchased another 17 caliber rifle today. I'm about 17 poor. Anyway, it's a Cooper Model 38 repeater in a classic/sporter config. Very nice wood, and a SS barrel . It has been shot 50 times since 1991. All paper work, test target, 200-300 peices of brass, boxes and boxes of Hammet 22gr bullets, RCBS dyes, shell holder, powder funnel, cleaning rod and a bottle of AA1680. It also comes with the original Cooper hard case.

It was a local gunsmith's personal gun, which he once made the mistake of telling me about. To make a long story short, he is in the process of building a new machine shop and I now have a second CCM. (Timming is everything!) It came with Warne bases and rings, and a Burris 4-12(scope is not my 1st choice). I take possesion tomorrow........ Can't wait!

Could you guys give me a ball park figure as to what this may be worth? I'm know I spent too much, but WOW is it a good looking rifle. My original ccm is unfired, and I wanted one to shoot, it seemed like the perfect setup. Thanks jh.

Sounds like a heck of a nice find. The brass alone is worth a fair amount. 22 grain bullets in the CCM, seems to me that it would better suited to <20 grain bullets. I have not idea what to guess for value on it, but it does sound like a terrific gun. The only thing that matters is that you had to have it and that you could spare the money at the time of purchase.

I, seen Tom Thomas in the last 1-2 months with similar peices on his table for 1100-1200 unless it wasd higher grade wood. Cooper's normal woo is pretty good anyway. I have a very early .17 CCM about the same configuration and that's asbout what I paid.

Also, Jim is right, these guns work great with 20 grainers. Try 9-9.3 grains of AA1680 for 3200-3250fps.

Well, I've prepped 60 cases and have a couple questions.

1) Is a Win. Small pistol primer the same as Win 6 1/2 Small pistol primer???

2) When you mentioned 20gr bullets being better, are you speaking of a particular 20gr bullet? I have lots of V-Maxes on hand, and wanted to try these. The reason I asked, is these cases are really hard to come by and fragile. I don't want to ruin any due to high pressure. Twenty gr bullets of different makers can develop different pressures... Can I go right to 9.0grs of AA1680 with the v-max?

3) Is moly good with this case? I shoot moly with all my other 17s. At this CCM slower speed, I don't know if it is really necessary. I think I'm going to skip the moly on the first 60, unless someone has info.

4) If someone could tell me how to post a image, would post a couple pics of 17s.

5) Do I dare take this with me when I call coyotes? Is it enough under 100yrds with a well placed shot? I know the v-max are not the bullet of choice for this, lack of penetration....

6) Will a Harrel powder thrower, throw charges this small? Not the pistol model, it's the BR one.....

I know this is a lot of questions, but I really appreciate any insight! jh

I think that the 20 grain v-maxes will be the best suited bullet for the CCM for a couple of reasons. The polymer tip gives them a terrific BC for their small size. And the other reason is that they will open up at the lower velocities that hte CCM will operate at. As for your Harrell's, I have the same model and throw charges from it in my .17 Hornet and have good luck. The 1680 meters very well through the measure and I get a very consistent charge. My advice is to set up your measure and scale and throw a series of charges. Measure each one and keep track of the deviation.

I will own the small pistol measure from Harrell's some day, just haven't got it yet. As for jumping right to the 9 grains, I can't comment but can guess that you will want to work up very carefully to spare the case life.
